Lagunitas Brewing Company
I was halfway through this beer and I thought I made a mistake. Did I open the wrong beer? Is this really the 10% ABV beast that it claims to be? Indeed it was, but you’d never know it. Chugging high ABV beers can be a dangerous game, especially when they go down faster than your Enron stock, but if I didn’t know any better I’d chug the other five.

I paid $9.99 for a 6-pack at my Incredible local liquor store and I will certainly do it again next fall when it’s available again. It’s a rare thing to get a beer this tasty with this much kick for such a good price. If you can find it for anywhere near this price point, you better pull the trigger on it.
I really enjoyed this one. It’s got the big hops that I like with a little bit of a twist to it. I’d almost call it a dessert IPA. Sweet caramel swirled with bitter piney hops. On paper, that seems like it could be a trainwreck, but man, it absolutely works. Plus, I don’t know how they managed to hide the high alcohol content in all of that, but it was a huge success. They claim that this beer was born out of a failed batch of barleywine and if that’s the case, then it turned out to be a glorious mistake. Stamped. The only drawback is that the big sweetness makes it tough for me to drink more than one or two at a time.
Lagunitas distributes their beers to 34 states, but Brown Shugga is only a seasonal offering. It’s available around the month of October.
