The 12 Beers of Christmas – Day 4: Great Divide Hibernation Ale

On the fourth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…
Hibernation Ale
Great Divide Brewing Co.
Denver, CO
ABV: 8.7%

CHUG Rating:
Chuggability: 5
See that abrupt turn away from the camera at the end? That wasn’t a dramatic turn for video effect, it was because this beast just whooped my ass and I didn’t want to face the camera anymore. This has a medium to full mouthfeel and it’s rocking 8.7% ABV. This isn’t for the chugging novice, but I had to get it down for your Christmas pleasure
How Much: 7
I’ll tell ya what, I think $10.99 for some of this brew is enough to make me come out of Hibernation (SEE WHAT I DID THERE?! OMG OMG) Not a bad price for a brew of this caliber. Spoiler alert: This was my favorite of the 6 beers that were sacrificed for the 12 Beers of Christmas, so it’s worth the money
Uhhh…Taste: 9
That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, a 9 for a Winter Seasonal brew. We don’t only love IPAs here at TC, apparently we love English Style Old-Ale’s, too. Hibernation has a roasted malt content like you wouldn’t believe. It tastes like a bitter fire roasted black coffee. There’s a slight hop presence, which is greatly appreciated in a winter beer to offset all of the malts. This brew is so full bodied you can almost chew it. It’s rocking a creamy molasses type flavor, and flirting with 9% but you could never tell, you just get a slight warmth in the aftertaste. 100% worthy of a TeamChug Stamp of Approval
Gettability: 4
If you haven’t caught on yet, this whole 12 Beers of Christmas thing will only feature seasonal brews, and you can find Hibernation on shelves in 27 states

Overall Rating: 9.1

Suggested food pairing: Cinnamon Rooster Ribs
